Recent Stuff
Our Wednesday night Group sessions these past few months have included…
Ready Steady Cook
A two team challenge was set up .... Each group had a bag of chick peas, mint, chocolate, oranges, avocadoes, tomatoes and corinader and was asked to conjure up a delicious 2 course meal ... Judge Miriam says it was amazing and deeeeelicious!
Quizzilla!
An enormous, menacing monster of a quiz! To help mark Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Awareness Month, the Group has vowed to match its wits against teams from other local youthgroups. And outrageous drag queen Felicity Flaps will be keeping score…
Pizza and Focus Group
Come and share pizza with us and talk about Cambridgeshire’s sexual health services.
Graffiti
A whole session on stencil making and graffiti spraying with talented artist and workshop leader Sonia Cakebread.
Silly sports
In the summer we played silly sports on Cambridge’s beautiful Parker’s Piece. This included three legged races, crazy cricket and some non ultimate Frisbee throwing. No-one was at all competitive ... yay right!
And the rest of the time…
As always, there’s the usual assortment of fun and games and random nonsense in between. We’ll have internet access, food and drink, books and magazines to dip into, fun things to do and other young LGB people to chat with. And of course our team of staff and volunteers will always be available for support and advice.
The Big Plan
Cambridge County Council has a ‘Big Plan’ to improve life for young people – and this was our chance to offer ideas on how to improve it for next year. Plus as a reward for doing our civic duty, we had a giant chocolate rice crispie cake to look forward to.
"Hey, chocolate! Now that’s more like it." P, 19
Cambridge Carbon Footprint
This charity dropped by to teach us about sustainable living. The Group had its brains taxed with an ethical-food quiz, as well as making our own do-it-yourself beansprout incubators!
"Painting jam-jars is going to save the planet? Nice one." Q, 12
Philosophical Debate on the Merits of High Art in Culture
No, not really – it was an argument about whether Little Britain USA is homophobic. Gay groups in America had complained, so it was time for us to form into teams and argue for and against. Which side would you be on?
[Update: turns out gay groups in America didn’t complain, it was all made up by the tabloid press! But we still had a cool debate about the messages television sends out.]
Amnesty International
The charity that campaigns for human rights gave us an eye-opening talk, highlighting the denial of gay rights around the world. But it’s not all depressing: it also featured a list of things we can do to change things.
"It’s shocking, the things people do to other people." JK, 20
Theatre Trip
In November the Group took a trip down to London to see Muhammad Ali and Me, a play about a young mixed-race girl growing up in care in the 1970s. The storyline was harrowing – abuse, neglect, the whole nine yards – but the play used poetry, song, music, movement and sign language to show how fantasy can help us find freedom.
"Brilliant!" W, 16
